Steer the course of history through ten eras, from the first cities to space travel. Fulfill specific objectives to take time into a Variant Era, an alternative story with new rules, technologies, and units. But beware of Crisis Eras: following a path of chaos and disorder can plunge the world into a future filled with war, plague, or ignorance. However, a wise ruler can always turn a crisis into an opportunity... Choose your path carefully, as the eras you traverse will have a lasting impact on your people and the world.

Decide how they will remember you

Customize your nation by adopting unique Nation Spirits throughout the game. Will your nation be of warriors or explorers? Is your people led by a great Khan or a monument architect? Will your name be remembered for changing pop culture or dominating the world economy? Which aspects of your culture will impact history?

Master a deep and intriguing economy

Manage your economy carefully and create an expansion and construction powerhouse. Start with basic resources to earn food, wealth, and production. As you progress, decide how to transform these simple goods into more valuable products through research and improvements. Specialize your regions by turning iron into weapons or tools, wood into paper or lumber, and gold into coins or jewelry. Send surpluses where needed, allowing the producers of your empire to feed distant colonies or let the heart of your industrial territory supply troops near enemies.

Unlock technologies and ideas

Seek knowledge to research scientific and cultural advances, unlocking new units, buildings, and improvements to expand your cities and strengthen your armies. Research Defense to train your first archers, Foundry to master iron production, or Guilds to create wines. Variant and Crisis Eras include unique alternatives, ranging from Cloud States in the Ether Era to underwater cities in the Utopia Era.

Win on your terms

Achieve ultimate success in the Victory Era. Near the end of the game (or sooner if your strategy is sound), domination allows a nation to choose victory conditions. The rest of the world must decide whether to fight to achieve victory before the dominant nation... or oppose its decision. Risk everything to achieve victory in the Renaissance or carefully plan your triumph in the modern era.
